Every year Bhava creative director Francisca leads a small Eco-Fashion retreat in her home country, Costa Rica.
The week is full of hand weaving, batik painting, and jewelry making, but we still make time to give back to the local community. Visiting our favorite animal rescue center, and the newly launched Puerto Viejo art school are highlights of the trip. Both are projects close to our heart, BHAVA donates a percentage of profits and supplies to each and we encourage you to learn more and do what you can to contribute to these or other projects close to your heart.
The Jaguar Animal Rescue Center in Playa Chiquita is a non-profit foundation to rehabilitate mistreated, injured and/or confiscated animals, which are then reintroduced to their natural habitat in protected areas.
This little baby howler monkey's mother was electrocuted, he was found by locals and brought to the center to be cared for until ready to be reintroduced to the wild. For more info about this inspiring mission visit the site here.
The Art School of Puerto Viejo, is a very special project designed to provide an artistic outlet for the children in the local community. The local public school did not have a budget for art, so Eva Perlich has donated her time and energy to creating a beautiful place for the local children to discover and develop their talent and expression. Many of the individual stories of the children are heart breaking. They come to school even on holidays when the regular school is closed, and what they create is inspiring.
Visit their site here, most recently they are in need of a new floor in the classroom. If you have art supplies to donate please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org and we will deliver them on our trip next year.
If you are interested in joining us next year see the Ethical Fashion Academy site here.
